<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hi!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Long time no see. I'm still alive, riding constantly, and showing several fun ponies right now in all kinds of different shows. Even hunters & breed shows! Oh, and I bought a 3 y/o OTTB too- she was too good to pass up. Cadence has been having a stelar show season, and seems to have really hit her stride. Here are some videos from yesterday's XC school:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxHCTYbJ3f4jB_FgCH3KQ2XI7TFuQMp2lYVpjj0fMXLnrLagRI8bcNemjOOBIQjpekHpn9WW8y1wZaD-ZBJ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Aqueduct & skinny angled rail question</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can't really see it, but there's a clump large wooden mushrooms placed right where you'd need normally ride to the skinny rails, so you have to make this insane turn that makes them all the more challenging! Or jump the mushrooms ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwBAZxcHYcANF5r_FEry-hZGX_vZ3MasNHfGYl2Or3gBFAh_Sg8RdYdFL0j9gZqZJT7tXESgXxe-ZlyHuam' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Drop to chevron</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwAvjpecuYbz9IQL4Ya8tr0dZqHUDU-jOlnKTsKAgJF0WBGcT9XDDD3UjjS3-3Q7bE3QU5ORchqZRPFs-BS' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Terrifying ditch & brush</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxJvuz6EalOVP8qPDtdXUn9CCk4oQfszSChdbOldFIMatKzGi0_c1RJqDLmjvrvDoi_HmoUPd51E8ArSVbS' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Water</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A little note on the 'so much better' comment at the end- our first run through the water (which wouldn't upload because it's too long) was a little on the quick and sloppy side. I tried to set her up a bit deep to the first fence (which is how you normally want to jump into water), and instead she chose to take off a stride early & go for the long spot. I'd have been fine with it if we were out on course, because she jumped and it wasn't unsafe, but we were just schooling yesterday. When we're schooling, we're there to get everything perfect so that we have the tools in place for when we are out on course!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That's it for the videos, because the rest are too long to upload.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thanks for taking the time to stop by my poor forgotten blog- hope to see you again soon!</div>

Like 4 farrier visits in 2 weeks regular. And by spring the heel, what I really mean is overreach and twist off the heel of the shoe so that it's a dangerous, mangled mess but leave the rest of the shoe perfectly intact & all the nails in so securely that nothing short of sawing her foot off is going to remove that shoe.<br />
Also it's advisable to own a horse who overreaches like mad no matter how you trim her feet & hates bell boots and tries to take them off every time you put them on so that there's basically absolutely nothing you can do to stop her destroying shoe after shoe after shoe.<br />
She's lucky she's pretty.<br />

So here we go!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7288323827843415702" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: Merriweather; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; position: relative; width: 586px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">1. Mares or Geldings? Why?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Mares. They're a pain in the ass at times, but just so much more fun. A good mare is worth her weight in gold, and when you actually get them working for you it's <strike>a bloody miracle </strike> worth all the tears and tantrums it took to get there.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfVHYaQtbVO3_MmKh_nGNeiOM1wFy2IANz-41s7ZCIRSHe8KCO5Y4c3LydLJ46XK-TkZQpuTHVnPMJ0ffoxaEynYrkfg0mhgyymyXlkp0Fbt9uSZ7_hNnp_KBhNq2A8cJgh_nxXYVQbgw/s1600/Cadence+Jump+Gallery_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfVHYaQtbVO3_MmKh_nGNeiOM1wFy2IANz-41s7ZCIRSHe8KCO5Y4c3LydLJ46XK-TkZQpuTHVnPMJ0ffoxaEynYrkfg0mhgyymyXlkp0Fbt9uSZ7_hNnp_KBhNq2A8cJgh_nxXYVQbgw/s320/Cadence+Jump+Gallery_001.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><i>Cadence demonstrating t</i><i>he spectacularness of a mare who is willing to work for you</i></span></div>
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7288323827843415702" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: Merriweather; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; position: relative; width: 586px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">2. Green-broke or Fully Broke?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Green broke. It's fun to sit on nicely broke horses every now and again, but I love the process. That said, backing babies isn't my favourite thing in the whole world. I love getting to be the first person to sit on a horse- it's a very special feeling, but as for the rest of it, I really only find it fun if the horse is either an exceptionally quick learner, or really damn athletic. (and also a quick learner)</span></div>
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7288323827843415702" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: Merriweather; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; position: relative; width: 586px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7288323827843415702" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: Merriweather; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; position: relative; width: 586px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 18.2px;">3. Would you own a "hotter" breed (ie. Arabian, Trakhener, etc).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 18.2px;">The real question is would I own a "quieter" breed.... and I'm genuinely not sure I would. It's fun to train a dead quiet horse every now and again (like Sheldon, who was a TB), but I like my horses to have a few screws loose. Plus I'm lazy, and kicking is just not my idea of a good time.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br style="line-height: 18.2px;" /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 18.2px;">4. What was your "dream horse" growing up?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 18.2px;">Just about any thing on four legs that nickered. I thought (and still do) that horse owners were the luckiest people on the planet, and aspired to be worthy of joining that elite club. I would have taken a mule if offered! Probably still would.</span></div>
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7288323827843415702" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: Merriweather; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; position: relative; width: 586px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; line-height: 18.2px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMHoVBVGDtohH41FzZW-qupJTPWS3qLqzT6m9brrzZNAX3SukkvcQB0dKGfBUBE5oGWj9mWOTzib5NbLTSXKJb22Cbx65wu1hyKJaREvgzZCk8bdE6WHlXYQ2KmCyE9Ea4zxYRZvXWy1Q/s1600/230815+W158.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMHoVBVGDtohH41FzZW-qupJTPWS3qLqzT6m9brrzZNAX3SukkvcQB0dKGfBUBE5oGWj9mWOTzib5NbLTSXKJb22Cbx65wu1hyKJaREvgzZCk8bdE6WHlXYQ2KmCyE9Ea4zxYRZvXWy1Q/s320/230815+W158.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Here we can be seen modelling a loose ring waterford, while above we're sporting a dreamcatcher-esque elevator combo thingy.</span></i></div>
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7288323827843415702" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: Merriweather; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; position: relative; width: 586px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">5. What kind of bit(s) do you use and why?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Just about everything under the sun. I like to change my bits up relatively frequently. Cadence's staple is a sprenger kk ultra, but we go xc in a waterford and hop around stadium in whatever I can dig up in the trailer. Often a baucher or plain old D-ring snaffle.</span></div>
<div class="post-body entry-content" id="post-body-7288323827843415702" itemprop="description articleBody" style="background-color: #fefdfa; color: #333333; font-family: Merriweather; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.2px; position: relative; width: 586px;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">My friend and I share our own little tack room at the barn, and between the two of us we have enough bits to furnish a tack shop! The worst part is that it's probably only 50% of our respective collections. On the plus side, our BO puts just about anyone's tack hoarding to shame,so I feel no guilt.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">6. Helmets or no helmets?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Helmets! Riding is dangerous enough- why add unnecessary risk?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">7. Favorite horse color?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Probably a nice dapple grey. I'd never own one though, unless it came with its own groom.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">8. Least favorite horse color?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Yucky dull brown. I'm really not too picky though, just figured I shouldn't leave a question blank!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQo2eGBG3D73CXI_2igxS_fh7-AjFpzd0iiVbr_tslpNOnimd-XNSDw3nkgOHJrZT7VyYUNDtCZGyl9NDq9z3JJtmR7KCvp3m4o2qlWwDrpJX-81lbEI4SWjCKgratrdUgXN83b_h50AU/s320/blogger-image-54363940.jpg" width="320" /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><i>Sheldon much prefers jumping, & has very little patience for that silly dressage stuff that makes his bum hurt</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">9. Dressage or Jumping?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Love 'em both. Prefer dressage to show jumping most of the time, but XC tops them all.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">10. How many years have you been riding?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Maybe 8 or 9?</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This afternoon. Went for a xc lesson!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">14. Most expensive piece of tack you own?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Jumping saddle. Costs 3x as much as just about anything else I own. That's probably not saying much though, as I think the next most expensive thing would probably be my dressage saddle which is maybe $600 CAD? (so that's like $50 USD for those of you who haven't been paying attention to the looney's abysmal performance of late)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">15. How old were you when you started riding?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">10,I think. But I had to stop for a while as we moved to Australia and then Nunavut, so I was 12 when I really got started.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">16. Leather or Nylon halters?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Leather. They look better, rub less, and are safer if your horse has to be turned out in one.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">17. Leather or Synthetic saddles?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Leather, but I don't really have anyhting against synthetic saddles. They just don't tend to last as long.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">19. English or Western?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">English, cause I'll always be an eventer at heart. But I can ride a pleasure horse without looking 100% ridiculous, and I even competed in a team sorting competition once. Reining's fun too.</span><br />

We had a strange show season. Missed our first show due to a cut that led to cellulitis. Then a strangles outbreak at our barn forced me to take her to my parents & quarantine her. After that we got 1 show in before I fall off a 3y/o and got a relatively major concussion, which had me out of commission for another month. So our show season finally got under way in late August. We had 2 runs at pre-training (novice) 2 at training, and champs before the season ended.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I haven't had the chance to upload most of my photos yet, but here are a few.</div>

Before I purchased Sheldon, he'd had maybe 10 rides post-track, most of which had been trail rides. His owner doesn't have an indoor, so if she wished to do any real work with him, she would have to ship out. As a result, before test-riding him he'd had maybe 3 actual schooling sessions since coming off the track.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
His former owner was kind enough to ship Sheldon (henceforth referred to as S) to a friend's farm so that I could test ride him. I was incredibly impressed with what I saw, especially after going to look at a rather disappointing horse the previous weekend. S was calm, steered quite well dor a horse so fresh off the track, moved cute, and calmly popped over an x! When I hopped on him, I found him a little onnthe lazy side, but incredibly comfortable to ride. Though small (15.3 max)he has a comfortable, floating stride and,fresh off the track, one of the most comfortable rockinghorse canters I've ever ridden! His only vices (that I could detect) were a tendency to randomly pop into the canter for a stride or two when he felt confused, and an inability to pick up the right lead. I popped him over a few jumps, and found him brave, but rather lazy. Given how green he was though, his juumping skills were actually quite impressive!<br />

The day he came home was quite a long one; we arrived home at about 11:30, so needless to say S was not ridden until the next day. Our first ride was pretty uneventful. He was calm & well behaved in a new arena, and we walked, trotted, and cantered left without a care in the world. As predicted, he didn't oick up his right lead canter, but coming out of a 4 year racing career that's not unexpected. We popped over a little x, and on a whim headed towards a gate which was lying on the ground. Even though we were trotting on a loose rein, S boldly stepped right over it in spite of being given every opportunity to "run out". At the end of our ride, I even hopped on bareback inna halter... Though his massive withers and protruding spine made that particular venture rather short lived ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

The next day we started the real work. I focused on teaching S to move off my leg, and introduced the notion of bending through the ribcage. He picked up on this quickly, and after a lovely bit of trot work, I decided he was ready to start working on his leads. After one false start in which he picked uop the left lead, S picked up the right lead... twice in a row! Good pony.<br />

Our final ride so far was a solo hack, which S did splendidly on. So far, our biggest training concerns appear to be the right lead canter, an inability to stand still, and a tendency to throw his head kn the walk. I've been incredibly impressed with hos good brain, and laid-back attitude. The plan is to solidify his flatwork over the next few weeks, and then reintroduce jumping when we can consistently pick yo the right lead, and consistently move off my outside leg. I'd expected that to take 2-3 weeks minimum, nut if he keeps going like this we may be back to jumping by the time my exams are over! Though then the bigger test will be fitness and muscle development... Right now I have to be very careful about what & how much I ask of him, as he hasn't got an ounce of muscle on his body & I'd rather not make him sore!</div>

He was picked up by a young lady who's putting herself theough school by flipping young horses, and she gave him some downtime at her farm before trying to find him a home. Due to the fact that we've still got snow and sub zero temperatures up here, Sheldon hasn't done a heck of a lot since he raced, as she didn't have an jndoor. He's proven himself to be a good trail horse though, and during the two rides in which she shipped him out to an indoor he behaved like a real gentleman.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj07RgP_pN4PvG29mFV20HL_g1-M54btblYaHPHtvCLy8cEvlpLQmof-v8E8wTxTUvCDC62dPu2xZQgID2fHP9zomkHiCbUbGo3VAH5KVRbUBrOye7EOpvzPcBINEKKM-lAxVnpD-hjebo/s640/blogger-image-1929825975.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj07RgP_pN4PvG29mFV20HL_g1-M54btblYaHPHtvCLy8cEvlpLQmof-v8E8wTxTUvCDC62dPu2xZQgID2fHP9zomkHiCbUbGo3VAH5KVRbUBrOye7EOpvzPcBINEKKM-lAxVnpD-hjebo/s640/blogger-image-1929825975.jpg"></a></div>I brought him home late Wednesday night, and since then he's been receiving some much needed TLC. He had his feet done today, and man oh man should I have gotten before & after pics. Unfortunately we'll have to make do with just the afters. His angles in the fronts were atrocious, and as a result there's a fair bit of bruising. The farrier thinks that given the soft ground outside right now, our best bet is to keep an eye on him, & just maintain a good trim schedule. We'll try to keep him barefoot and let his feet sort themselves out over time, rather than slapping a set of shoes on. Providing he doesn't get footnsore, that is! However, I've decided to take the post down. It's something that (although very pertinent to the Chronicle of Cadence) is quite personal, and after some reflection not really something I feel comfortable sharing with the world. I'm so used to just putting everything up here that it feels strange to have something I don't want to share, which is why I finally sucked it up and posted it in the first place. However I've come to the conclusion that there are some things the whole world doesn't need to know, and that doesn't make this blog any less honest. I hope you all understand, and thanks again for all the kind words. They mean a lot to me :)<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Thought I would end with a few quick pics from last week's jumping lesson:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtLl8i4Htd2zJbfJWix3jNd_UfyZKWPHvTV437haXuvd2kN9Xx8QBZ3X3zxXZ49nEw336PGw_eq9Ph08pkj0NSKKVjbFn2D7ZKH3HQt0ySo5GXkae_vmGlW_7iBTfN32GAiNXSur0tu64/s640/blogger-image-1788244029.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtLl8i4Htd2zJbfJWix3jNd_UfyZKWPHvTV437haXuvd2kN9Xx8QBZ3X3zxXZ49nEw336PGw_eq9Ph08pkj0NSKKVjbFn2D7ZKH3HQt0ySo5GXkae_vmGlW_7iBTfN32GAiNXSur0tu64/s640/blogger-image-1788244029.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><i>Le warm-up</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAz1nVGY6FUvj333_Ho8F83XJw4udmOEMthNugw7O0qRKP7ovrI7MhOUzim6G1UH7kwvH5n1qhdamQsL0AOX_hLdpgzeV4Q1b9-QbtHFUjfkxhIZb5_MQjCXsZOjIWCvgScI1LQhrs_n0/s640/blogger-image-727306264.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAz1nVGY6FUvj333_Ho8F83XJw4udmOEMthNugw7O0qRKP7ovrI7MhOUzim6G1UH7kwvH5n1qhdamQsL0AOX_hLdpgzeV4Q1b9-QbtHFUjfkxhIZb5_MQjCXsZOjIWCvgScI1LQhrs_n0/s640/blogger-image-727306264.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><i>Le bending line</i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVjo594gw_OTmvRXt4_vincHR5pQH2F8ezPbIC7oqL-OfojKirypuwKSYabgy3G4aPPXEfJNQQlCnwNqO09r8sJnSM-THmkdpxZoV6i6MKV9DzLVhcOXgEVZozzx7Yc9z0n_881to7T1Y/s640/blogger-image-742211438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVjo594gw_OTmvRXt4_vincHR5pQH2F8ezPbIC7oqL-OfojKirypuwKSYabgy3G4aPPXEfJNQQlCnwNqO09r8sJnSM-THmkdpxZoV6i6MKV9DzLVhcOXgEVZozzx7Yc9z0n_881to7T1Y/s640/blogger-image-742211438.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><i>Le oxer</i></div><br></div><br></div></div><br></div>Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01197789181776030907noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-42023400508409002.post-27619607619409273392015-03-23T11:53:00.001-07:002015-03-23T11:53:55.365-07:00Bareback Jump Day<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Not sure if I got around to blogging about it, but in late Jan I was on crutches for a while & took to riding bareback as I couldn't lift a saddle by myself. Cadence was a total superstar throughout that, and we basically did most of our normal dressage & a mini-version of our normal jump work bareback. She also handled being led, groomed, & mounted by scary crutch lady, while most of the other horses shrank from me in abject terror ;)</span></div><div>Unfortunately I didn't get any video or photographic evidence of this. However, after our (bareback) hack on Sat, I decided to pop the mare over a few small jumps and this time I DID get evidence! The moral of the story- my horse is awesome, extremely ridable, & in really great shape... but I need to raise my expectations and consistently insist on a higher quality of work. I have an awful tendency to get complacent and be like "well, that's decent..." which inevitably leads to some harrier moments, as that's when Cadence decides to take the wheel instead. Anywho, all in all Miss Mare-Face was awesome & is in a great place right now for our trip down south.<br />
<br />
I got my saddle back from the fitter last week, and he did a minor adjustment (free of charge! Love this guy) to my jumping saddle for me too. They'll do another fitting in the first week of March to make sure the flocking's settled properly, but the saddles both feel better already. Cadence also gets a massage Tuesday afternoon before we leave, and then come Wednesday afternoon we're off. North Carolina, here we come!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Bringing a horse back from time off, wether it's due to illness/injury, or simply a vacation, seems to be one of those things most people skip over. I get why- there's nothing particularly exciting about trotting in circles day in & day out. But how different people bring a horse back in to work, especially when the horse is sound and doesn't have to go through any rehab, seems to vary greatly not just between disciplines, but within them as well.</div>

I'm definitely a slow and steady wins the race kind of girl. Cadence had under two weeks off this winter, but I took a solid 3 weeks to bring her back. We spent a week lunging, slowly increasing the amount of time spent trotting and cantering, and adding side reins in at the end too. We then spent a week doing "light riding" and longe work, focusing on getting her hind end engaged and starting to work over her back a bit. We also popped over a baby x from the trot a few times. Then the next week, we started back to real dressage work & a little bit more jumping, focusing on keeping everything respectful & relaxed. Finally, this past week after about a months work, we had our first lesson back.</div>

We moved barns shortly before Cadence's winter holiday started, & I'm pretty sure half the people at the new place thought I was nuts slowly plodding along as we did. However, one month out we're almost back to full strength, & I'd say we're leaps & bounds ahead of where we left off before our holiday. Could we have accomplished as much if I'd just thrown her back into nearly full work? She only had 2 weeks off, & probably could have handled it, but I like to look at the re-conditioning process as a chance to take your horse back to square 1. It's like you're restarting them from the ground up; you can fill in any gaps you find, correct any bad habits that may have cropped up, rebuild their muscling correctly, etc. and hopefully emerge from the process better than you left off.</div>

A little over four years ago, I sat on a very special little mare for the first time! She was green, hot, so uneven and crooked it felt like she stopped trotting and started pacing every time you'd go to the right, and she whipped her head up in the air every few strides when she cantered. She walked in circles around you when you attempted to bridle her, pawed incessantly, never stood still, and was the narrowest thing you ever did see. But to me, she was perfect.</div>

She was light, sensitive, and athletic. Every movement was graceful, every jump was powerful. We've had our fair share of ups & downs. In December of 2011, Cadence had a 3inch piece of hoof wall removed from her leg. She was out of work from December till February, and it wasn't until about July that we were back to where we were before the accident. And this past summer, I fall off the Mare more than I stayed on- a dangerous habit when you've got Mono.</div>

If you'd asked me four years ago where I thought I'd be today, I'm sure I would have said that we'd be popping around CCIs and that by 2020 we'd be rocking around Rolex.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Totally Cadence & I. Or maybe William Fox-Pitt.... hard to tell.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While we may not have made it to Rolex yet, we've had some ups as well. Cadence and I won the first event we ever completed, and have continued our track record by placing in all but two of the events we've completed. We placed at champs both years we attended, and have racked up numerous ribbons in the dressage world as well,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Completing her first xc course! She went on to win her next show too.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But more important than any of that are the accomplishments you see on a day to day basis. I have a mare that will follow me around the ring. She schools second level dressage like a rockstar, & jumps 1.30m like its no big deal. I trusted her enough to put my precious niece on her as a 2y/o, and Cadence gives her pony rides just about every time they visit.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We've had the opportunity to ride with some amazing people too. When we went to North Carolina in 2013 we rode with Denny Emmerson at his farm in Southern Pines, I've also had the privilege of riding with Canadian team riders Hyde Moffatt, Belinda Trussell, and Jessica Phoenix (one from every discipline!) along with countless other talented and inspiring professionals, including my own coach.</div>

Then, starting Christmas Eve, I began to recondition her. I can be a little obsessive about reconditioning, but I'd rather go slow than risk an injury. Unfortunately the down shot of this plan is that Cadence puts fitness on really quickly, and within a few lunge sessions she's ready to rock, even if the musculature isn't there. So I've had a wired, under muscled nut job to deal with these past few weeks!<br>

She's starting to improve though, to the point where I popped her over a little x on Thursday, and it was all quite civilized! We did have a minor sore back to contend with this past week, so she's getting a massage tomorrow and a long lining session to get her working over her back a bit better.Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01197789181776030907noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-42023400508409002.post-65105911218281667742014-11-26T17:31:00.000-08:002014-11-26T17:31:18.011-08:00Mare Memoirs- Over Fences<div style="text-align: center;">
I did a post a while back with some of my favourite "oh sh*t" moments over fences. As much as I love all those pictures (I really do... they crack me up & remind me not to take life too seriously) I thought I should add a compilation of my favourite "good" jumping pictures. Just so y'all don't judge us too harshly!</div>

Not realizing his mistake, Denny was cooling his horse out and telling everyone how awesome the course was, when Jack LeGoff comes up to him and says "Denny, when the gods rained stupidness on the earth, they forgot to give you an umbrella"</div>

Unfortunately with two midterms tomorrow, that day is not today. Cadence & I have had an interesting season.... to say the least.... and I desperately want to get my thoughts about it down on paper. But between school, work, horses, and everything else I try to fit in to a day (physio, ballet, sleep, etc.) there's not much time left over for the necessities, like eating, let alone "luxuries" like blogging. I do miss it though.<br />

Again.Avoiding a massive paper... which is less than 20% complete... and is due in two days, one of which will be spent at a horse show. Good time management at its best here people. So instead of working, I decided to share some of the awesome photos taken by a friend at our last xc school.<br />

I wrote my last set of exams in the week preceding Easter. I then moved back into my parents house, spent Easter with my family, packed, and headed off to the RK3DE! Rolex was brilliant, and hopefully I'll get around to uploading the pictures to my computer one of these days.</div>
<div>
After arriving home from KY, I spent a few days at home before driving down to NY to spend the weekend with my extended family and celebrate my godfather's 50th birthday. I then came home for a few more days, before leaving for a 3 day dressage show with Miss Cadence. That went pretty well, and we earned scores ranging from 59% to 70% at training and first level. Once again, I spent a few more days at home, and then headed down to see my cousin who was in an absolutely jaw-droppingly good production of Les Mis.</div>
<div>
During my days at home, I've been working and studying. My summer semester started on May 8th, but as I'm only taking two courses I've been basically working full time on top of that. My normal day consists of 2-4 hours of school work, riding 3-6 horses, mucking stalls, and then babysitting, tutoring, or whatever other form of work I can manage to cram in to the remaining hours of my day. I'm also trying to paint and move in to the new house I'm renting, but (unsurprisingly) I haven't had a lot of time in which to do that!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Interesting Part:</div>
<div>
I currently have 6 horses that I'm riding regularly. In addition to Cadence, I've been conditioning 3 event horses for a friend, riding them a couple of times a week. This has been great work for me, as all 3 are lovely horses and having the opportunity to sit on such nice horse flesh (let alone getting paid to do it) is always a treat. We've been spending a lot of time hacking, and recently we've added flat schools to our repertoire. I've also been riding another horse for her full time, with the intention of either taking the mare in a baby event this summer (maybe popping around an Entry/BN level HT) or taking her out hunting.</div>
<div>
I've also taken on another mare, owned by the barn manager of a lovely (and MASSIVE) private boarding facility in the area. This horse, let's call her Miss P, is a chestnut TB mare and acts every bit of the stereotype. She's been off the track for a little over a year, & has a bit of a bolting issue, as well as a bit of an attitude problem. After scaring away a few part boarders, Miss P has fallen into my hands to ride. She's actually quite a lovely mare- nice and athletic- but highly inconsistent, very crooked, and exceptionally green. We had one ride where she behaved like an angel, and people riding with us commented on how beautiful she was. Two days later, she started off the ride bolting in every which direction every few seconds, and it took me over an hour to get her to respond to me. Unfortunately, she's been put on a 30 day tranquillizer (for turnout-related issues, not riding issues) which is going to make my job a hell of a lot more difficult once she comes off the tranq, but my goal is just to make the most of these 30 days so that by the time it wears off, hopefully I'll have a straighter, more educated psychopath to work with ;)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cadence Update:</div>
<div>
Cadence has been doing wonderfully. We had our first XC school of the year yesterday, and she jumped like a pro. Didn't bat an eye at any of the training & prelim level complexes we worked through. Even rode a drop & skinny combo that might have made it onto a challenging prelim/easy intermediate course. Our issues came in the form of bossiness. I schooled her in the myler, and while we could get all of our canter gears... I got a fair bit of attitude with them. I think we schooled through the issue pretty effectively, but I still plan on riding her in the dreamcatcher at our first HT this coming weekend. Better to nip the attitude at the bud early in the season, rather than letting it build!</div>
<div>
We're going to run our first event at Pre-Training (Novice) level, and then if all goes according to plan move up to Training level in two weeks time. I'll admit, it makes me a bit nervous as I've never gone Training before either, but I've got no doubt in my mind she can do it as long as I ride her effectively :)</div>

I'm still managing to keep her in work, but between riding, dancing, working, and studying I barely have time for eating let alone blogging! I only planned as far ahead as June, as the rest of our season will largely depend on how confident she is after her upgrade. If she's a bit backed off, we'll run some of the 'softer' trainings but if she upgrades confidently we'll run some of the trickier courses that are more akin to a small prelim course. Anywho, our original plan was as follows:<br />
<br />

So with about one month to go before our first show we're beginning to review dressage tests & do some coursework-type-exercises & focus on the technical elements of our jumping as much as possible given the limited space. In terms of training, we're right on mark. However, one month out we still have at least a foot of snow on the ground & the temperature never moves above freezing for more than a day. Thus the chances of my carefully scheduled show season actually going as planned are slim. Even if the snow miraculously melts by the end of the week, and we don't get any more, the chances of the ground drying out enough to be safe to run (Cadence is going brilliantly, and as we don't have any events that we <i>need</i> to run, I can afford to be a bit picky about what I run her on) are low. Moral of the story? Put it in pencil, because inevitably something will get in the way of even the best laid plans!</div>
